NORTHEAST PHILADELPHIA — A murder suspect who Philadelphia police say was seen on surveillance video cameras walking several blocks away from the scene is now under arrest.
Damen Bernhardt, 24 of Kingsessing, was taken in at about 10:20pm Tuesday on the 4500 block of Cottman Avenue, near where Tacony, Holmesburg and Mayfair come together.
The murder happened on July 21 at about 9:25pm. Police responded to the 600 block of E. Allegheny Avenue in Kensington for a report of a theft in progress and a person screaming.
They found a people gathered around a 22-year-old man who’d been stabbed multiple times. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene shortly after.
Meanwhile, it was apparently Bernhardt seen carrying a black book bag and taking off his shirt before was last seen walking east on Monmouth Street, from Kensington Avenue.
Bernhardt is charged with murder, robbery, and two counts of theft: for unlawful taking and receiving stolen property.
Police have not said who or what led to Bernhardt, but there was a $20,000 reward offered for information leading to an arrest and conviction.
